Many guys who wear a short hair style experience dry or itchy scalps on a regular basis. Dryness and irritation could be caused by environmental conditions and a sensitive scalp. That’s why it’s important to moisturize the scalp daily to ensure the optimal health and appearance of the skin.
But you shouldn’t use just any moisturizer or lotion you find at your nearest pharmacy. A body lotion is formulated for arms and legs, not for skin that gets shaved several times a week and produces visible surface oil.
Here is the difference between a generic lotion and a product built for the scalp.
Lotion products and abrasive ingredients
Look at the back of any regular lotion and you will find a long list of active and inactive ingredients — preservatives, additives and fragrances. On a scalp that is regularly shaved, several of those can irritate, and irritation on a bald head is very visible.
Parabens
Parabens are preservatives found in many skincare products. They can cause skin reactions in people with sensitive skin, particularly anyone prone to dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis. They include methylparaben, propylparaben and ethylparaben.
Heavy, occlusive bases
This is the one that catches bald men out. Most body lotions hydrate by sealing moisture in with oils and silicones. On an arm that is invisible. On a bald scalp it is a gloss layer that catches every light in the room — which is why so many men quit moisturizing entirely.
A moisturizer made for your scalp
Matte Moisturizer solves that by changing how the hydration is delivered. Instead of sealing oil on top of the skin, it uses five humectants at different molecular sizes — glycerin, trehalose, hyaluronic acid, beta-glucan and erythritol — which pull water into the skin and hold it at different depths and durations. Trehalose is the sugar desert plants use to survive dehydration.
Aloe barbadensis leaf extract handles the other half of the problem. Shaving your head is exfoliation, and aloe is the most established calming agent for exactly that. Vitamin E is in there as an antioxidant.

A note on fragrance
Matte Moisturizer is scented with orange peel, geranium and citronella — a bright citrus-herbal note, deliberately different from the warm sandalwood of Shine Slayer. If shine is the real issue
