How Artists Prepare and Apply Scalp Micropigmentation Ink

Scalp micropigmentation artists conceal bald spots by tattooing tiny dots of color on the scalp. This technique is called stippling and gives the illusion of having a full head of hair. Proper tattoo preparation includes gathering specialized ink, needles, and moisturizer for bald head care. Here is how you can prepare for your treatment session:

Scalp Micropigmentation Preparation

To prepare for your micropigmentation treatment, you may recommend that your client wash and avoid applying moisturizer to the target area. This keeps the treatment area clean and free from oils and product buildup that could interfere with the process. Folicule offers a moisturizer for bald head care that clients can use after treatment to improve the health and appearance of their scalp and hair tattoo. This moisturizer is also beneficial after the tattoo has fully healed.

Match the Ink With the Client’s Skin Type

For clients with lighter skin tones, you can use our brown ink. This pigment creates a warmer, more natural hair color for the client. Clients with darker skin types are better suited to our black ink. Both ink types must be diluted with distilled water to make them as effective as possible. You can add more water to create a lighter shade that matches your client's natural hair color and skin tone.

Folicule's black and brown micropigmentation ink can be purchased separately or within our bundle. Our ink is not like traditional tattoo ink, it is specifically designed for permanent makeup professionals and should only be used for scalp micropigmentation. This is because traditional tattoo ink is placed deeper into the skin for a permanent design. Scalp micropigmentation ink is placed higher in the skin to replicate the depth of natural hair follicles.

Dilute the Folicule Ink

To properly dilute our ink, you will need distilled water and a small empty container. If you are using multiple colors, you can write the shade color on the container with a white or opaque paint marker. To achieve a specific shade, such as a Fitzpatrick level two or three, you will need 18 millimeters of water per one milliliter of ink. Mix the solution together with a syringe or other mixing device to fully blend the ink and water together.

Each ink order comes with a dilution card that provides written instructions for producing various pigment intensities ranging from one to six on the Fitzpatrick scale. Your order will also come with one-ml and 10-ml syringes for accurate measurements. If you’re a visual learner, we upload video tutorials for pigment dilution on our YouTube channel.

Apply the Ink With Our Equipment

After diluting the ink solution, you can then apply the ink to the desired area with your tattooing equipment. The tattooing equipment we offer includes transparent, emerald green, and stainless steel cartridges. These cartridges house the needle itself. They come in a blister pack with twenty pieces per order, allowing you to throw away used cartridges and keep your equipment sterile.

We also offer micropads and practice needles for artists to test their skills. Our micropads come in a variety of skin tones, from dark to light. This allows you to practice scalp micropigmentation with products that offer a similar feel to real skin. These products are useful as training materials for new and experienced artists.

How to Care for a New Hair Tattoo

Since micropigmentation does not enter the skin as deeply as a regular tattoo, it usually takes about five days for the skin to heal fully. During this time, your clients should avoid pools, chemical products, and touching or scrubbing the area. They should keep the area clean and healthy, as infections and scabbing may cause the tattoo results to fade prematurely.

To help your clients clean their new tattoos, we offer a custom soap cleanser. Tattoo Lover Care is a gentle foam cleanser that removes sweat and bacteria from the surface of the skin, protecting the tattoo. It has a pleasant aroma and leaves the skin feeling fresh.

Other Products and Moisturizer for Bald Head Care

You can offer your clients our professional line of after-care products, such as moisturizers, anti-shine gels, and sunscreens. Our mattifying moisturizer removes shine from the scalp, providing a more natural look for the tattooed areas. For oily skin types, we offer anti-shine gel. This product absorbs excess oil, reduces the appearance of pores, and is designed to last all day.

While scalp micropigmentation creates the appearance of hair, your clients will still need to apply sunscreen to the scalp. Sunscreen protects their skin and tattoos from exposure to harmful UVA and UVB rays. Just like traditional tattoos, sunburns and excessive sun exposure can cause the ink to fade prematurely.
