The longevity of scalp micropigmentation (SMP) pigment varies depending on several factors, including the pigment used, the client’s skin type, the artist, and the level of aftercare.
Generally, high-quality SMP pigment lasts 4 to 6 years or longer before needing a touch-up.
What affects how long it lasts
- Skin type. Clients with oily skin may see faster fading than those with drier skin. The head is the canvas, and how well it is maintained decides how long the work holds. This is also why SMP is delivered over at least two to three sessions — so the artist can see how the pigment has healed in that particular scalp.
- Sun exposure. Excessive UV fades pigment faster. Good scalp care is good SMP care; without proper protection you will need a touch-up sooner.
- Skin care routine. Harsh or abrasive products speed fading. Avoid anything with isopropyl, SD or denatured alcohol high in the ingredients list.
- Physical activity. Sweating and friction accelerate fading. Follow proper aftercare, and make sure your client does too.
- Pigment quality. High-quality pigment outlasts cheap pigment. Folicule typically holds 4 to 6 years when delivered by an experienced, certified artist.
- Artist experience. Choosing the right colour for the client and working at the correct needle depth determine not only how long the treatment lasts but whether it succeeds at all.
How to make it last
Follow the aftercare instructions your artist gives you, avoid excessive sun, and use gentle products.
