How long does scalp micropigmentation ink last?

The longevity of scalp micropigmentation (SMP) ink varies depending on several factors, including the type of ink used, the patient's skin type, the SMP artist, and the level of aftercare.

Generally, high-quality SMP ink can last for several years, typically between 4 to 6 years or even longer, before needing a touch-up.

The longevity of scalp micropigmentation ink can be affected by several factors, including:

  1. Skin type: Patients with oily skin may experience faster fading compared to those with drier skin. For scalp micropigmentation, the head is the canvass and how well that head is maintained will impact how long the ink will last. This is also important to conduct scalp micropigmentation over at least 2-3 sessions to see how the micropigmentation ink has healed in the scalp.

  2. Sun exposure: Excessive exposure to sunlight and UV rays can cause SMP ink to fade more quickly. Good scalp care is good SMP care. If you do not use proper protection against the sun, you will see scalp micropigmentation ink fade faster over time which will result in needed a touch sooner.

  3. Skin care routine: Patients who use harsh or abrasive skincare products on their scalp may experience faster fading. We recommend natural ingredients in moisturizers like tea tree oil, aloe and much more.

  4. Physical activities: Sweating, friction, and other physical activities can cause SMP ink to fade more quickly. Please follow proper aftercare guidelines when performing scalp micropigmentation and make sure your client follows accordingly.

  5. Ink quality: High-quality scalp micropigmentation ink will last longer than cheaper or lower-quality inks. For example, Folicule has been shown to last typically 4-6 years when delivered by an experience and certified SMP artist.

  6. Scalp Micropigmentation Artist Experience: Choosing the right color for your client and going into the skin at the correct needle depth are all factors that determine not only the longevity of the treatment but of it's success.

To maximize the longevity of your SMP ink, it's important to follow the aftercare instructions provided by your practitioner, avoid excessive sun exposure, and use gentle skincare products. Additionally, you may need touch-up sessions every few years to maintain the desired look.

Overall, scalp micropigmentation ink like Folicule can last for typically 4-6 years before needing a touch-up, but it's important to understand that the longevity can vary depending on several factors.
