Folicule Shine Control Duo

A Shine-Control Routine for SMP Clients

Table of Contents

Scalp micropigmentation works by convincing the eye it is looking at thousands of real hair follicles on a closely shaved head. That illusion depends on texture. A matte scalp reads as stubble. A glossy one reads as a smooth, reflective surface with dots on it.

Which is why shine control is not a cosmetic afterthought for SMP clients. It is part of keeping the work looking like what it is supposed to look like.

Why SMP clients notice shine more

Most SMP clients arrive having lost hair to androgenetic alopecia — hereditary, DHT-driven, and the reason the follicles miniaturised in the first place. The follicles shrink; the sebaceous glands attached to them carry on producing sebum as normal. With no hair to wick that oil away, it sits on the surface.

After SMP, two things change. The scalp is usually kept shaved, so there is even less to absorb oil. And clients start looking at their heads, closely, in mirrors and photos, in a way they never did before. Shine that was always there becomes very visible.

    The first week: hands off

Follow whatever your artist specifies — protocols vary. Generally, clients hold off on showering and moisturising until around day four, so the pigment can settle and the skin can recover. After that, a small amount of moisturizer, tapped or gently rubbed in, seals the healing surface.

Things to avoid early on: chlorinated pools and hot tubs, which dry the skin and can fade pigment prematurely; direct sun; and anything with isopropyl, SD or denatured alcohol high in the ingredients list. Alcohol is used as a fast-drying agent in a lot of skincare and it is one of the surest ways to dry out a healing scalp.

    The daily routine, once healed

Cleanse gently. A mild, sulfate-free wash a few times a week. Over-washing triggers rebound oil production, which is the opposite of what anyone wants here.

Moisturize every day. This is the step clients skip and the one that matters most for longevity — a scalp that dries out fades faster. Matte Moisturizer hydrates oily skin without adding grease and finishes matte rather than dewy. It has no silicones, and aloe to calm the irritation that comes with regular shaving.

Mattify before you go out. Shine Slayer uses rice starch to absorb sebum and flatten breakthrough shine, restoring the texture that makes SMP read as real stubble. It is non-stripping and built by people who do SMP for a living — no white cast, no tacky film, nothing that needs scrubbing off.

SPF, every day it is bright. Sun is the single biggest controllable threat to SMP longevity. UV breaks down pigment molecules, cloudy days included. Scalp Sunscreen is SPF 40 and mineral-based with a built-in mattifier, so it protects without putting the gloss straight back.

What to send clients home with

The Shine Control Duo covers the two daily steps in one. For the days immediately after a session, Scalp Wipes and Photo Finish Foam handle cleanup and redness.

Artists stocking for their studio can find the full professional range, including pigments and needles, in the Folicule Pro Store.

    Set the expectation early

Tell clients at the consultation that SMP is not a one-time purchase, it is a look that gets maintained. Done properly, most people go 4 to 6 years before a touch-up. The clients who go longest are the ones who moisturise daily, stay out of the sun, and keep the finish matte.
