Folicule Shine Slayer mattifying scalp balm

How Do You Get Rid of a Bald, Shiny Head?

Table of Contents

Short answer: wash gently, hydrate with something that is not oil-based, and finish with a mattifying balm that absorbs sebum. Stripping the oil off works for an hour and then makes it worse.

The longer answer is worth two minutes, because most men get this wrong in the same predictable way.

What makes a bald head shiny

Oil — specifically sebum, produced by sebaceous glands in the skin of your scalp.

Most men go bald through androgenetic alopecia, the hereditary pattern baldness driven by follicle sensitivity to DHT. Over years, affected follicles miniaturise and stop producing visible hair. What most people do not realise is that the sebaceous glands are not affected by that process at all. They keep producing the same sebum they always did.

With hair, the oil wicks along the shafts and disperses across thousands of strands. Without it, the same oil sits on a smooth, curved, bare surface — and a smooth oily curve is a very efficient mirror. Sweat, dead skin cell build-up and greasy products all add to it.

Some men also shave by choice rather than necessity. The mechanism is identical: no hair, nowhere for the oil to go.

    The approach that backfires

Attacking it. Strong sulfates, alcohol-heavy products and harsh degreasing all remove oil instantly — and damage the moisture barrier while they do it. Skin repairs a damaged barrier by producing more oil. You end up shinier in the afternoon than you were before, plus tight and flaky.

The same trap catches men who give up on moisturizer entirely because every one they tried made them greasy. Dehydrated skin overproduces oil too.

    The routine that works

    1. Wash gently, a few times a week. Mild and sulfate-free. A bald scalp does need washing — skipping it lets oil and dead skin build up — but it does not need degreasing.

    2. Hydrate without grease. Matte Moisturizer is built for oily skin and shaved scalps. Five humectants — glycerin, trehalose, hyaluronic acid, beta-glucan and erythritol — pull water into the skin instead of sealing oil on top of it. Aloe calms post-shave irritation. Fast-absorbing, matte finish, no silicones. It is the moisturizer for men who quit moisturizing.

    3. Mattify. Shine Slayer is a mattifying scalp balm with one job. Rice starch absorbs sebum and flattens breakthrough shine without suffocating the skin; jojoba seed oil helps stop the overproduction at source. No white cast, no tacky film, nothing to scrub off.

Apply the moisturizer, let it settle, then the balm. Both together is the Shine Control Duo.

    Two things people forget

Sunscreen. Your scalp takes more direct sun than almost any other skin on your body. Most body sunscreens are oily enough to undo the whole routine — Scalp Sunscreen is SPF 40, mineral-based, with a mattifier built in.

Reapplication. Sebum production is continuous. A top-up after lunch on a hot day is normal.

    If you have SMP

Shine matters even more. A matte finish restores the texture that makes scalp micropigmentation read as real stubble — gloss flattens it into a smooth surface with dots on it. Everything above applies, and all three products are non-stripping and SMP-safe.
