Get Rid of Head Shine on a Bald Head

Table of Contents

Most advice about scalp shine tells you what causes it and then leaves you to work out what to do on a Tuesday morning. This is the routine.

    Ninety seconds, three steps

Step 1 — Wash (a few times a week, not daily). Mild, sulfate-free. Your bald scalp still needs cleaning — oil and dead skin build up and both contribute to shine — but washing hard or washing daily backfires. Stripping the moisture barrier makes your skin produce more oil to repair it.

Step 2 — Moisturize, then wait. Matte Moisturizer, smoothed over the scalp with an upward and outward motion, on clean skin. Five humectants — glycerin, trehalose, hyaluronic acid, beta-glucan and erythritol — pull water into the skin instead of sealing oil on top, which is why it hydrates without adding grease. Aloe calms post-shave irritation. Give it thirty seconds to settle before the next step; this is the bit most people skip and it matters.

Step 3 — Mattify. A dime-sized amount of Shine Slayer, smoothed evenly across the scalp. Rice starch absorbs sebum and flattens breakthrough shine; jojoba seed oil helps stop the overproduction at source. It goes on smooth and disappears — no white cast, no tacky film.

That is it. The Shine Control Duo is steps two and three together.

    Why the order matters

Moisturizer over balm undoes the balm. Balm over unsettled moisturizer dilutes it. Hydrate, pause, mattify — in that order, every time.

Why your scalp does this at all

Most men go bald through androgenetic alopecia: hereditary, DHT-driven, and it miniaturises the follicles over years until they stop producing visible hair. The sebaceous glands beside those follicles are untouched by the process and keep producing sebum at the same rate.

With hair, that oil wicks along thousands of strands and disperses. Without it, the same volume of oil has one smooth curved surface to sit on. That surface reflects light. Nothing has gone wrong with your skin — it is doing exactly what it always did, just somewhere more visible.

    Before a big day

Wedding, interview, shoot, stage, anything photographed:

    • Do the full three steps, and apply the balm ten minutes before you leave, not as you walk out
    • Nothing oil-based that morning — no body lotion, no greasy sunscreen
    • Skip powder; it reads chalky under hard light
    • Put the balm in your pocket for one top-up

    Outdoors

A bare scalp takes more direct UV than almost any other skin on your body. Most body sunscreens are oily and will undo the routine instantly. Scalp Sunscreen is SPF 40, mineral-based and non-comedogenic, with a mattifier built in.

    After the gym

Wipe the sweat rather than letting it sit and mix with sebum — Scalp Wipes do this in one pass — then reapply the balm. Thirty seconds.
